The 80-Year-Old Gallery Owner Who Knew More About the Moon Than I Did 🌑

I consider myself a moon girl. And then a stranger in Pioneer Square reminded me there's always more to learn.

I want to tell you about last Thursday night.

My boyfriend John had an art opening in Pioneer Square in Seattle. Gallery walk. 5pm party. We left Port Townsend at 1pm - plenty of time, right?

Wrong.

A semi-truck broke down on the bridge. The ferry ran late. By the time we walked into that gallery, it was 6:15pm. An hour and fifteen minutes late to his own art opening.

The gallery owner is 80 years old and has owned his bookstore/gallery for decades. He looked at us, completely unsurprised as he pointed to his moon calendar by the entrance, and said with a knowing smile:

"Of course. No surprise. It's the Old Moon today."

I stopped dead in my tracks.

I am a moon girl. I track the full moon. The new moon. Eclipse seasons. Mercury retrograde. I write about lunar energy for this community every single week.

And I had never heard this term used quite like that.

I went home and dove in immediately. And what I found was a beautiful lesson in how ancient wisdom and modern astrology sometimes use different words for the same truth.

🌑 The Old Moon, Explained

"Old Moon" is an ancient, traditional term used by sailors, farmers, and folk practitioners for centuries to describe any waning moon. The whole period after the Full Moon when the light is fading and the moon is losing power.

It's an old-fashioned, poetic term rather than a precise modern astrology phrase. But it carries real wisdom. When people used to say "it's the Old Moon," they meant the moon was waning, energy was contracting inward, and things naturally slowed down. And when energy slows down, things happen, like being late to your own art show opening.

In modern astrology, what happened on August 6th specifically was a Third Quarter Moon, also called the Last Quarter Moon. This is one of the four primary lunar phases - the moment about three weeks into the lunar cycle when exactly half the moon is illuminated, and the other half has fallen into darkness.

The 80-year-old gallery owner wasn't wrong. He just knew the old language. He lives his life by the moon cycles I learned. And the energy he was describing? Absolutely correct.

🌗 What the Third Quarter Moon Actually Does

The Third Quarter signals a sacred energetic threshold within the lunar month. It is a time to audit intentions set at the New Moon, releasing what no longer serves your path forward.

Spiritually, the last quarter Moon phase is a time for reflection and release. It's also an opportunity to let go of anything that no longer serves you and to prepare for the new beginnings that come with the imminent New Moon.

In other words, it is not a moon that supports rushing forward. It is not a moon for launching, pushing, or forcing things to happen on your timeline.

Unlike the Full Moon's expansive energy, the Third Quarter contracts inward, asking you to confront what you built versus what you actually need right now.

A broken semi-truck on the bridge. A late ferry. A commute that turned into unexpected hours of waiting.

The universe was not punishing us. It was winding down. And it didn't much care about our timeline or a party.

The Difference Between the Third Quarter and the Old Moon

Here's where it gets interesting and where our 80-year-old friend's wisdom actually goes a little deeper than modern terminology.

In astrology, the lunar cycle has eight phases. After the Third Quarter comes the Waning Crescent, and within that, the very final days before the New Moon are called the Balsamic Moon, sometimes called the Dark Moon, and in old folk tradition, the Old Moon.

The Balsamic Moon is the very end of the waning crescent, when the Moon is within about 45 degrees of the Sun and closing in on the New Moon, the final 3 to 4 days before the cycle begins again.

Between the Last Quarter Moon and the New Moon, we have the Balsamic Moon. This phase is one of slowing down, becoming quiet, going within in preparation for the new cycle that will be starting soon.

So technically, August 6th was a Third Quarter Moon. The true Old Moon, in the strictest astrological sense, would have come a few days later.

But the gallery owner was using the term the old way, the folk way, meaning simply: the moon is waning, things are winding down, and delays are part of the plan.

He wasn't wrong. He was just old-school. And I love old-school, and I respect it enormously.

Eclipse Season Is Here

Here's what makes all of this even more significant.

We are right in the middle of eclipse season.

A total solar eclipse crosses Greenland, Iceland, and Spain this week on August 12th. We won't see totality here in the Pacific Northwest, but we are absolutely within the energetic field of it.

A partial lunar eclipse follows on August 28th.

Eclipse seasons are the universe's most dramatic periods of change and acceleration. They close old chapters and open new ones. The waning moon that delayed us Thursday was the final exhale before all of that intensity arrives.

The universe was taking one long, deep breath in. Before everything accelerates forward.

💎 A Crystal for the Waning Moon and Eclipse Season

Moonstone, the Perfect Cycle Keeper
There is no more appropriate stone for honoring the lunar cycle than Moonstone. It carries the energy of every phase; the brightness of the Full Moon, the quiet darkness of the New Moon, and everything in between. Working with Moonstone during the waning moon helps you release with grace, strengthen your intuition, and trust that every ending is already becoming something new. Place it on your nightstand or carry it in your pocket as eclipse season arrives this week.

🌗🌑

I arrived at that gallery late, a little frazzled, and I learned a lesson I didn't expect.

I also left with a new appreciation for an 80-year-old gallery owner who looked at two late arrivals and immediately knew exactly what the moon was doing.

The old wisdom runs deep. And it's worth listening to - wherever you find it.

Watch the sky this week. Something significant is beginning. 🌑

With love and a little humility,
~Jenn 🌙
