The veil is thin, and the messengers are watching.
Hello, beautiful souls.
We're days away from Samhain, also known as Halloween, that sacred season when the veil between worlds grows whisper thin. It's the time of year when I notice the wild ones more. A crow on the shop awning. A spider spinning in the corner of my porch light. A doe standing perfectly still on an Uptown sidewalk, looking at me like she knows something I don't.
Living in Port Townsend, we share our little town with so much life. Deer wander the neighborhoods like they are in charge, and wait for the cars to clear before using the crosswalk. Herons stand guard along the shoreline of Chinese Gardens and Kai Tai. Murders of crows hold their meetings as they fly from treetop to treetop.
And every so often, one of them stops you in your tracks. That's not an accident. That's a message.
Just this morning I had a conversation with a daddy-long-legs that was slowly moving down from my bathroom light into the sink. He made me think of how often I am interacting with wildlife during my daily life. And he inspired this blog 🙂
For thousands of years, across nearly every culture on Earth, people have believed animals carry wisdom from Spirit. So today, let's talk about what it means when certain animals show up for you, and the crystals that help you tune in.
🔮 How to Know It's a Message
Not every squirrel is a sign. Here's how I tell the difference:
✨ Repetition. You see the same animal three times in a week, in real life, in a book, on a sticker someone hands you.
✨ Timing. It appears right as you're wrestling with a decision or thinking about someone.
✨ Unusual behavior. It lingers, makes eye contact, or shows up somewhere it really shouldn't be.
✨ The feeling. Your body knows. A shiver, a pause, a sudden sense of pay attention.
When all four line up? Listen closely.
🦉 Owl: The Keeper of Hidden Wisdom
When Owl shows up: You're being asked to trust what you know but can't yet prove. Owl sees in the dark, and she's reminding you that you can too. Look beneath the surface. Someone may not be telling the whole truth, or you may not be telling the whole truth to yourself.
Crystal companions: Labradorite for awakening your inner sight, Amethyst for deep intuition.
🕷️ Spider: The Weaver of Your Life
When Spider shows up: You are the author of your own story. Spider asks: what are you weaving right now? Is it the life you actually want? She's a sign to get creative, be patient, and build something beautiful one thread at a time.
Crystal companions: Carnelian for creative fire, Pyrite to call in that money spider luck.
🦇 Bat: The Guide Through Rebirth
When Bat shows up: Something is ending so something new can be born. Bat lives in the dark of the cave and emerges each night into a new world. If Bat is circling you, you're in a season of transition. Trust the dark. It's where the magic incubates.
Crystal companions: Black Obsidian for shadow work, Moonstone for new beginnings.
🪽 Dragonfly: The Shapeshifter
When Dragonfly shows up: Change is coming, and it's going to feel lighter than you expect. Dragonfly asks you to see past illusions, including the limiting stories you tell yourself. Her iridescent wings remind you that you shimmer differently depending on the light. You're allowed to show up in new colors.
Crystal companions: Labradorite for transformation, Aquamarine for flowing with change.
🦌 Deer: The Gentle Heart
When Deer shows up: Soften. Deer asks you to lead with gentleness, toward others and especially toward yourself. You don't have to push so hard. Grace is its own kind of power. (And in Port Townsend, Deer may simply be reminding you to brake for wildlife, meaning to slow down. 😉) When Deer appears, an adventure of the soul may be calling.
Crystal companions: Rose Quartz for self-compassion, Green Aventurine for heart-centered growth.
🐦⬛ Raven & Crow: The Magic Makers
When Raven or Crow shows up: Magic is afoot. These are the witch's birds, the keepers of secrets and messengers of the unseen. Crow often appears when it's time to speak your truth or step more fully into your power. Raven appears when deep transformation is near.
Crystal companions: Black Tourmaline for protection, Shungite for clearing the way.
🦅 Hawk: The Messenger From Above
When Hawk shows up: Rise up and look at the bigger picture. Hawk soars high so she can see what's coming. She's asking you to get out of the weeds of the day to day and notice the patterns. A message is on its way, so keep your eyes open.
Crystal companions: Tiger's Eye for focus and clear sight, Clear Quartz for amplifying your vision.
🦊 Fox: The Clever Trickster
When Fox shows up: Get clever. Fox thrives by being adaptable, quick on her feet, and a little bit sly. She's a sign to think creatively about a problem, especially around work and money. There's a side door you haven't noticed yet.
Crystal companions: Carnelian for bold action, Sunstone for confidence and personal power.
🪶 Heron: The Keeper of Stillness
When Heron shows up: Be still. Stand in your own power. Heron waits patiently in the shallows, completely present, until exactly the right moment. If you see her along our beaches, she's reminding you that you don't have to chase. What's meant for you will swim right up.
The lore: In ancient Egypt, the Bennu was a sacred heron-like bird associated with the sun, Crystal companions: Hematite for grounding, Blue Lace Agate for calm.
🐦 Hummingbird: The Joy Bringer
When Hummingbird shows up: Seek the sweetness. Hummingbird reminds you that joy is not frivolous, it's fuel. She asks you to savor the good things and stop putting your happiness on hold until everything is "handled."
Crystal companions: Citrine for joy and abundance, Rose Quartz for sweetness.
🦋 Moth: The Soul Seeker
When Moth shows up: Follow the light, even if you can't see where it leads. Moth is the night-born cousin of the butterfly, deeply tied to intuition, dreams, and the moon. She often appears when you're being guided by something you can't quite name.
Crystal companions: Selenite for divine connection, Moonstone for dreamwork.
🐍 Snake: The Sacred Shedder
When Snake shows up: It's time to shed your old skin. Snake asks what you've outgrown, a habit, a belief, a version of yourself. Letting go can feel vulnerable, but the new skin underneath is radiant.
Crystal companions: Moldavite for rapid transformation, Golden Healer for gentle renewal.
🌙 A Little Samhain Practice
This week, as the veil thins, try this simple ritual:
🕯️ Light a candle and hold a piece of Labradorite or Amethyst.
🕯️ Ask: Which animal has a message for me right now?
🕯️ Close your eyes and notice what appears. Don't judge it, even if it's a slug. (Slugs have wisdom too! 🐌)
🕯️ Journal for five minutes on what that animal might be trying to tell you.
Then keep your eyes open over the next few days. Your messenger often shows up in real life soon after.
